Hawker Hurricane – Airfix

Airfix Hawker Hurricane packaged as part of their Battle Of Britian “Ready for Battle” set.

This was released as ‘everything you need’ to make an instant diorama and included paints, glue, and brushes (which I did not use). Also in the kit are a set of figures (which looks somewhat over scaled and cartoonish to me), a Bedford truck, and a refueler. Airfix has since released the vehicles as three separate sets.

The build starts with the cockpit, but Airfix has a someone unique take on this. The cockpit seat framing actually gets built ontop of ‘framing’ that is glued onto the bottom wing which is one piece. There’s also an option to display the gun bays, but if you do, some careful testing will be needed to make sure everything aligns before closing up.

The cockpit was pretty much straight from the box, with only a small amount of piping and Eduard steel seat belts. The gun bay panel needs to be cut open in the upper wing, but the kit supplies replacement panels. The instrument panel had supplied decals, which fit really well.

The rest of the kit fitted fairly well and everything was painted and decaled up with one of the Battle of Britian schemes. I used my usual silly putty as masking technique for the camo. Some light chipping, exhaust staining with Tamiya smoke over brown, oil paint panel definition, and the plane was finished.
